My boyfriend’s housemate is amazing at getting us to try new things. I am pretty sure that not a week goes by without him sending some random request (zombie bingo anyone?) but recently he stumbled on a cracker.
In deep Camberwell lies a gymnastics school. Opened Tuesday Wednesday and Thursdays with adult classes on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. When Gary sent around this particular email we were all pretty keen – firstly who doesn’t want to learn how to do a back flip and secondly, well do I need a secondly?
So even though I got lost on the way (and its not the nicest of places to get lost in) I eventually made it to the gymnastic school for 8pm. Now adult classes are open to anyone 16 and above and we were definitely the oldest. I am only 25 and felt ancient. But honestly that was half of the fun. laughing at my boyfriend and and his housemate, two rugby players, trying to do carthwheels up and down the hall was enough of an ab work out for me so how I managed the rest of the lesson is beyond me!
The instructors took us through a thorough warm which I loved….carthwheels and handstands and all of those things we did as kids. Then onto the apparatus to work us into the stages of a back flip. We were all at different levels but the instructors were amazing at accommodating us and got us all to eventually throw ourselves backwards off a springy board (into the arms of hunky gymnast no less).
I worked every muscle I had in my body and really felt it for a few days after. It is quite possibly my favourite exercise in London and one that I would love to keep up…….and wait for it! It cost £5! Yup you heard me a tiny weeny £5. And that was for nearly 2 hours of jumping around like a looney. Where else in London could you get a fitness class for £5. I challenge you to find me one. And gymnasts of Camberwell – I salute you!
