Hello Fresh – How I became an overnight whizz in the kitchen

You know when you are walking down the street and people are selling things or handing out flyers?!  Well I have one of thoses faces where these people think………SCORE. Hand me a flyer and I WILL take it. So it was no surprise that when we walked past the Hello Fresh stand at Taste of London last week that I got pulled aside for a ‘chat’ with one of the sales reps.  Fast forward 15 minutes and I’m handing over my credit card details for a weeks trial.  Yup – that’s me!

imageAnyway on Monday night our box of goodies arrived in a big cardboard box.  Everything was neatly wrapped and there was ice boxes to keep everything cool and fresh.  I had ordered the original box that consisted of three meals for two people – one fish, one chicken and one steak.  Now, my boyfriend is a 6ft2 rugby player. He eats ALOT. So we were intrigued as to whether the portions were going to be big enough.  We also have full time jobs so cooking fancy elaborate meals on a Monday or Tuesday is just never a goer.  However we thought lets give this a try!

Monday night was cod night!

The box contained literally everything you need to make the meal from start to finish except for whatever salt and pepper you want for your personal taste.  Im not one to usually follow recipes and I can honestly say that my boyfriend is a better cook than me (hopefully he doesn’t read this because I stand firm that I’m better at everything……lies!). So when I mastered the first meal and it looked similar to the recipe card I was delighted – Move over Nigella!

Not only that but the portion size was perfect.  There was no ‘left overs’ like we were promised but there was definitely enough for a good sized dinner for us both. Neither of us were left hungry after! In fact I was pretty stuffed.

Day two and it was now time for the chicken recipe to shine! This was a bit more of a faff to make (although it was still plated in 30 minutes).  However the fact that everything was there ready for me made cooking the dish seem like less effort.  And it was DELISCIOUS. Soooooo yummy.

Recipes aside the best thing about Hello Fresh is knowing where your food comes from.  I absolutely love knowing I am supporting local farmers and having an awareness of where everything in my meal from the chicken to the ginger comes from.  I am getting an exposures to more ingredients and experimenting with great recipes.

The box only cost us £19.50 because we got it on offer at the Taste of London festival but there are always lots of offers and incentives going.  It works out at unbelievably good value.  I really think it would be near impossible to recreate three meals of the same standard for £20!

We are going to be regular Hello Freshers from now on – at last my ‘stop and chat’ nature has worked in our favour and maybe just maybe I can steal the crown for the best cook in our relationship.
