10,000 women smashing 10,000 meters!

I am not sure I have ever finished a work out and heard my two favourite words shouted in my face – FREE and CHAMPAGNE.

imageFree champagne after a 10km run is only one of the small things that differentiated the Nike 10km run from your standard 10km races.  On Sunday the 21st June 10,000 women took to Victoria park (which is no where near Victoria I might add……don’t be fooled) to take part in the annual Nike Women’s run.

I haven’t been able to run more than 5km for a while because thanks to an injury my body has just said no.  However I had signed up to this race months ago with one of my best friends Katie and knew, even if I had to walk, that I would complete the whole thing.

I woke up early on the Sunday and joined the flowing river of orange Nike vest tops on the London underground and made my way over to east London. Once me and Katie found each other we made our way to the start lines for a warm up lead by Equinox and some motivating words from Ellie Goulding (who is totally awesome by the way).

After some waiting around in the hussle and bustle we were on our way.  I don’t usually run with other people but having Katie by my side was nothing short of a miracle.  I made it twice round the course to complete the 10km and had her to keep me going when I thought I was flagging.  I am an emotional mess these days (I cried when the three legged dog came on Britains got talent…..literally sobbed like a child) and was really overwhelmed by all of the support around the course.  It was truly inspiring to see people cheering on the sidelines and offering support to one another but it was the kids shouting out to their moms that really got me. Not only that but Nike did a great job by keeping the course lined with inspiration quotes and up beat music. I particularly enjoyed the full brass band that played a few tunes around the 7km mark.

Once we passed the finish line we were pointed in the direction of the champagne.  You would think after running a 10km we would be a bit pooped but the thought of free champagne had us running straight past the water stations and straight into the line for free Freixenet!!

We finished the day by chilling out on the grass in the sunshine, with a glass of bubbles and a handful of goodies (think a Nike necklace, Birchbox samples, Metcalfe popcorn and so many other scrummy goodies I couldn’t possibly list them all).

Nike you did it – we really do run London!
